Agnes Beatrice Duckett's Obituary
Agnes Beatrice Duckett, affectionately known as ‘Ag,’ entered into eternal rest on June 19, 2016 at Fort Washington Health Center, in Fort Washington, MD. Agnes was born on February 4, 1920 to the late John and Lauretta Coombs of LaPlata, MD.
At the tender age of eleven, Agnes lost her mother and was raised by her grandmother, Martha Coombs. She was educated in Charles County Public schools in a two room schoolhouse. She later met and married her lifelong companion Ernest Duckett at Brice’s Chapel Methodist Church on April 4, 1937. They were blessed with eleven children and 63 years of marriage.
Despite losing her mother at an early age, she became an exceptional homemaker; making certain her entire family attended church regularly, usually taking up the entire pew. Cooking and making her family’s clothes, were just a few of her many gifts. She also enjoyed helping Ernest tend the garden, canning foods, and was known for making dandelion wine.
As a member of Brice’s Chapel, and later Saint Matthews AME church in Newton, MD, Agnes served on the church committee and participated in other ministry activities.
More than anything, Agnes loved to host family and friends. The house on the hill was known for the Duckett family reunions, where upwards of 400 people would attend for food and fellowship; as well as weekly Sunday dinners where everyone was welcome. After the family property was sold in 2003, the county officially named the landmark Duckett Place.
To reaffirm her faith, Agnes was baptized at Free Gospel Church of Christ in Coral Hills, MD in the early 90s. After losing her beloved husband Ernest in 2000, she started her new journey as an independent woman. She enjoyed running errands with her friends from the seniors community at Fort Washington Adventist apartments, where they would make weekly visits to the dollar store and Golden Coral. Some of her favorite past times were playing computer games, watching Madea movies and plays, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles and watching sports; especially cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and dogging the Washington Redskins.
Left to cherish her memory are nine children: Helen ‘Elaine’ Briscoe (Boe), Wilbur, Francis (Atalay), Edward, Roberta (Ray), Porcia (Will), Nathan (Kathy), Jocelyn, Clayton (Tawan), forty grandchildren; fifty-eight great grandchildren; thirty great-great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
Agnes is preceded in death by her husband Ernest, children Russell and Ronald; siblings Jeanette, Carmen, Roberta, Eva and Homer; grandchildren, Kevin Duckett, Debra and Edward Briscoe, Nathan Duckett, Jr., Sheilah Duckett, Lisa Duckett, Ashley Duckett and Byron Duckett.
Her viewing will be held 9am until time of service 11am on Monday, June 27, 2016 at Victory Christian Ministries International, 3911 St. Barnabas Road, Suitland, Maryland 20746. Interment Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, Maryland.
