Charles Howard Embody's Obituary
Charles Howard Embody, “Duke”, 81, passed away on September 17, 2024, surrounded by family, at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Charlotte Hall, MD. Charles was born on February 3, 1943 in Pottstown, PA to the late Edwin Embody and Beatrice Herring Embody Kulp. He was raised by his stepfather, Paul Kulp, beginning at the age of 8 years old.
Charles attended Pottstown High School where he met the love of his life, Jill Leyrer. They married on September 12, 1963. From this union, two daughters were born, Denise (Embody) Moran and Stacy (Embody) Tennant. He resided in Waldorf, MD (Bannister Neighborhood) where he lived for over 45 years. However, he lived out his final years at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home.
In 1961, Charles joined the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1968. After his service to the Navy, he joined the Washington D.C. Police Department. Charles retired from the police department in 1990. However, while still working on the police department, he took classes and became a master locksmith and worked as a locksmith on the side. After retiring from the department, he became an employee at Pax River Naval Air Station as a locksmith, which became his second and final retirement.
Charles was a very active member in the Bannister Neighborhood Association for many years, to include the swim team, and pool operations. He loved to bow and rifle hunt with his police buddies, who he remained close to over the years, especially his partner, Tom Angelis. Tom regularly visited Charles at the Veterans Home. In addition to bow and rifle hunting, he loved gardening, cooking and baking, even though he didn’t use his cooking and baking skills too often. Charles enjoyed helping others and made friends everywhere he went. He also enjoyed camping in his motor home and traveling with his wife, Jill and the grandchildren, Tanya Crowe, Ty Tennant and Wyatt Tennant and his great grandchildren, Ayden Crowe, Alexis Crowe and Cameron Tennant.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his step brother, Allen Kulp.
Charles enjoyed life to the fullest, family meant everything to him. He was a great husband, but most of all, he was the best father ever; definitely one of a kind.
Family and friends will unite on Thursday, October 10, 2024 for visitation at 10:00 a.m.; service at 11:00 a.m. at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 7 Industrial Park Drive, Waldorf, MD. Interment immediately following the service at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3221 Mattawoman Beantown Road, Waldorf, MD.
