DOROTHY BOWIE MADDOX's Obituary
Dorothy Lorraine Bowie "Sissy" Maddox, 90, of LaPlata, Maryland passed away on Monday, January 19, 2026, after a lengthy battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born during a snow storm on December 30, 1935, delivered by one of her sisters in their home in Pisgah, Maryland. She was a life-long resident of Charles County Maryland. She was a wife, mother, sister, grandmother (affectionately called “GaGa” by her grands), friend and a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church where she enjoyed fellowship and serving others in the name of the Lord. She worked for the Federal Government, where she began her career as a clerk typist in 1956 and worked her way up the ranks, retiring as a Contracting Officer from the U.S. Navy in Indian Head, Maryland in 1990. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved attending her church where she was a lifelong member, and served as choir member, Financial Secretary, Treasurer and various other positions. She served as Treasurer for 20 plus years, stepping down after her diagnosis in 2019. She absolutely loved serving the Lord and helping others. Her hobbies included gardening, coloring, putting puzzles together, playing cards, traveling, and being a Bingo “queen.” She loved playing bingo and was a very strategic player. She played locally at the American Legion in LaPlata and the Lions Club in Bel Alton. She loved country music and attended many of the Fan Fair celebrations where she met stars such as Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash, June Carter-Cash and many others. She loved spending time with her family and friends and playing board games with her great grandchildren. Often times after putting puzzles together, she would frame them and give them as gifts to family and friends. She is survived by her children, Janice (Jimbo); Dorothy (Brett); and Walter (Barbara). She is also survived by her nine grandchildren—James (Crystal), Jamie (Mike), Jessica (Spencer), Meredith (Robert), Kimberly (Brad), Jennifer (Rob), Nicole, Aubra (Justin) and Walter (Jessica) and 20 greatgrandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, David, her five brothers and four sisters, and her mom and dad. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at 10 AM until time of funeral service at 11 AM. With repast to follow at the Pisgah United Methodist Church.
