Dorothy Mae Wright's Obituary
Dorothy Henderson Wright, 96, of Indian Head, MD, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center (formerly known as Physicians Memorial Hospital), La Plata, MD, with her son, daughter and son-in-law by her side. Dorothy was born on May 10, 1921, in Indian Head, MD, to the late Frances Edith Rowe and Victor Fairchild Henderson.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Robin J. Wright; daughter, Shelley S.W. Lewis; son-in-law, Harold E. “Hal” Lewis; a sister-in-law, Ruth Wright Henderson; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Faye Wright; and her husband of 68 years, Benjamin “Jay” Wright; a brother, Gordon T. “Fuzz” Henderson; and a half sister, Dolores Hubert.
Dorothy and Jay were married at Marbury Baptist Church and remained together for 68 years, living in Indian Head, MD.
She was trained at Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, D.C., where she achieved her RN as a Registered Nurse, and worked as an RN for several years.
Dorothy then worked for the Federal Government as an Assessment Manager for 39 years at the Naval Propellant Plant/NOS in Indian Head, MD.
She was also a Championship Ballroom Dancer with the Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Washington, DC. In September 1959, she won the Arthur Murray dance contest at the Shoreham Hotel in DC.
She served on the Council as Secretary for the International Order of Job’s Daughters, Bethel #24 in Indian Head, and was also the Secretary of the Potomac Heights Leisure Club for 11 years.
She enjoyed traveling with the Leisure group, playing pinochle, bowling, reading, and being with her family.
She also loved to watch her favorite local baseball team, the Washington Senators and then the Washington Nationals.
Viewing was held at the Williams Funeral Home on Monday October 2. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 3. Interment Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, MD.
