John Hyde Posey's Obituary
John Hyde Posey (Johnny), 87, of Port Charlotte, FL, passed away on September 16, 2023, in La Plata. Johnny was born on August 13, 1935, in Washington, D.C., the youngest son of Francis Wills and Julia Hyde Posey. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Carolyn, son Joseph, as well as brothers Frank, Tom, and Sonny and grandson Hunter Rex Sansbury. Left to celebrate his life are his children, Steve (Debbie), Michael (Michele), Bruce (Mary Susan), and Kevin along with 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
Johnny graduated from LaPlata High School in 1953 and went on to attend the University of Maryland. Johnny met his wife, Carolyn, on a blind date and spent 67 years as husband and wife. They went on to have five children, Steve, Michael, Bruce, Joseph, and Kevin. Johnny was never idle and kept busy even as a young boy. He delivered local newspapers, changed the marquee at the movie theater, cut grass for numerous neighbors, worked at Edelen Brothers Tobacco Warehouse during their annual auctions, served as a lifeguard at Chapel Point Amusement Park, worked at P.S. Bowlings, would repair bicycles for girls around the Town of La Plata, and played baseball at every opportunity.
As an adult he never slowed down. Johnny was deputized to serve as security guard at Marshall Hall amusement park and worked landscaping to help support his growing family. Johnny started his professional career for Southern MD Electric Company. He capped a co-op career spanning 44 years of service starting as a groundman in 1955 and rose through the lineman ranks before becoming Transmission and Substation Superintendent in 1985. All those who knew him remember he often said he “loved Mondays and hated Fridays”. He was part owner of Posey’s Market in LaPlata MD until relocating to Florida.
Johnny knew how to enjoy life and loved meeting new people. He was an avid baseball player. He played during high school and into college as well as for the American Legion League. Johnny tried out for two major league baseball teams. He coached both Little League and Pony League baseball and was Scoutmaster for the LaPlata Boy Scout Troop of which his sons participated. He traveled extensively in his motorhome with his wife Carolyn, friends Gary and Barbara Lyon and Jimboy and Betty Williams. He loved trains and built extensive train models and would ride the rails at every opportunity. Johnny had a love of American history and would read extensively on battles of the Civil War and World War II. He was also an avid Redskins fan and held season tickets which he would attend games with family and friends.
Johnny was a long time parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church LaPlata and St. Charles Borromeo in Port Charlotte, Florida. Visitation will be at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 11th from 4:00 – 7:00 PM, a mass of Christian burial followed by a repast on Thursday, October 12th at 11:00 AM at St. Ignatius Chapel Point with private family interment on Friday, October 13th at Trinity Memorial. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of John H. Posey to the restoration fund, Restore and Renew, at St. Ingnatius Chapel Point, 8855 Chapel Point Rd., Port Tobacco, Maryland 20677.
