John William Thomas' Obituary
John William Thomas of Oxon Hill, MD passed away on December 8, 2024. John was the eldest of five born in 1946 to Helen and Earl Thomas, Sr. and raised in Baltimore City, MD. He attended McDonough High School and then served in the Merchant Marines concurrently while attending Towson State University, majoring in education. It was at Towson that he met the prettiest girl he'd ever seen, Jeanie Kuhns, who was also majoring in education. They married in April 1969. John began his career with Prince George’s County Public Schools as a history teacher at Surrattsville Junior High in 1969. He then taught at Lord Baltimore Middle School (later renamed Isaac Gourdine MS) from 1971 until retiring in 2013.
John is preceded in death by his wife Jean Kuhns Thomas, his parents, and his brother Earl Thomas Jr. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Mike Thomas (Kati), Dave Thomas (Erin), and Laura Townsend (Timmy); eight grandchildren Ryan, Kasey, Haley, CJ, McKenzie, Nick, Emily, and Zachary; his younger sisters Pat Thomas and Pam Starkloff; and his nephews Matt and Sean and niece Shannon.
John loved history, the Baltimore Colts, and the Baltimore Orioles. He valued hard work, education and family. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, reading, watching baseball, crossword and sudoku puzzles and taking walks.
A private family service will be held December 20 with interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3221 Mattawoman Beantown Rd. Waldorf, MD 20601.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's name to the Alzheimer's Association or the American Heart Association.
