Joyce Ann Murray's Obituary
On Wednesday, July 13, 2016, Joyce transitioned peacefully to eternal life at Fort Washington Medical Center, Ft. Washington, MD. She was born on Aug. 25, 1947 in Newburg, MD, to the late Alfonzo and Cecilia Yates. She was educated in the Charles County School System.
Joyce met and married the love of her life, Gary Murray, of Waldorf, MD. From that union, they neutered a beautiful family of one son and two daughters. She was employed for many years at the U.S. National Archives in Washington, DC, where she later retired in 1996.
As many of you know she loved music. She was affectionately known as “Ms. Jam.” She provided deejaying services throughout the many different venues in Charles County. She also loved to play bingo, attend card games, put together puzzles, football; as her team was the Washington Redskins and attending family functions/events.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Mary Rita Thomas, Clarice Thomas, Ruth Rosier and Betty Rosier; brothers John Thomas and Thomas Yates, and grandson Zion Butler.
She is survived by her husband, son Patrick Yates, daughters Chantelle Butler and Shara Murray, her daughter-in-law Stephanie Yates and son-in-law Thomas Butler III, her sisters Mary Alice Farmer, Barbara Rosier, Madeline Yates and Susie Moore, her brothers George Thomas (Margaret), James Yates aka “Sonnyboy”, Joseph Yates (Wynita), her grandchildren Lakeyia Smith, Thomas Butler IV, Bryan Yates, Kwesean Thompson, Tamera Yates, Isiah Butler, Krystal Matthews, and Zionah Butler, her great grandchildren Braelin Yates, Daniel Robinson, Mi-na Butler, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
On Friday, July 22 family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at New Life Church, 9690 Shepherds Creek Place, La Plata, MD 20646.
