June Montgomery Scott's Obituary
June Montgomery Scott, 96, formerly of La Plata, passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023 in Shallotte, North Carolina.
Born on February 3, 1927 in Camp Springs, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Patrick (Harry) Montgomery and Rachel Rebecca Montgomery. The Montgomery family moved to Indian Head in 1941 when June's father got a job working at the Naval Powder Factory. She started attending Lackey High School where she met her high school sweetheart, James Lloyd "Chuck" Byrd. They married February 6, 1946. Their first child, Christine, was born in 1947, followed by Michael in 1948 and Debbie in 1961. Chuck died suddenly in January 1968. Four years later, June met Godfrey Scott on a blind date that was arranged by Godfrey's sister-in-law. It was an instant connection and they married October 23, 1971. June retired in 1982 as a Technical Librarian at the Indian Head Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center. Throughout her retired years, she enjoyed camping and gardening with her loving husband, Godfrey. They loved to tend to their garden, canning and freezing just about everything they grew. June was also very active with her church where she was a member for over 80 years. She served in roles such as the church financial secretary, a greeter/usher, a lay reader and participated in many church functions. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and also joined in community groups, such as Neighbors Eager To Serve (NETS), that feed the hungry and help the less fortunate. June was also a member of the Red Hatters Club, the Potomac Heights Leisure Club, the Richard Clark Senior Center, and the Indian Head Senior Center. She enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting, crafts, playing BINGO and watching the Family Feud.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 29 years, Godfrey Scott and her brother, Donald Montgomery.
June is survived by her children Christine Cook, Michael Byrd (Colleen), and Debbie Lucas (Ronnie); eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.
