Lois Bowie Moore's Obituary
Lois Moore passed away on March 8, 2024 at the age of 83. She was born in La Plata on August 15, 1940 to the late Henry Joseph Bowie and Mildred Flater Bowie. She grew up in Welcome and was the youngest of four children.
Although she loved to have fun, she was a serious student and maintained a lifetime love of learning. Her academic talents enabled her to win a full scholarship to Strayer College in Washington, D.C. In 1959, Lois married Sherwood Moore and they had three children.
Lois always had an interest in law and began her career at the Justice Department as a legal secretary and was promoted to legal technician. While working, she earned her degree in paralegal studies and became a paralegal at the DOJ in the Department of Legal Council. Lois loved her work at the DOJ and was proud to be an important part of the department known as “The President’s Lawyers.”
After retiring, Lois became a Master Gardener of Charles County. Her other interests included reading (American History/Politics), needlepoint, dogs, and wildlife.
She was known for her sense of humor, integrity, generosity and thoughtfulness. She was very loyal to her family and always willing to help. She had a gift for making people feel better through her humor and by helping them to see the positive side of any situation. She was a member of La Plata United Methodist Church and believed that God was present in every aspect of her life which enabled her to accept and overcome many hardships.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Henry Joseph Bowie, Jr., Jean Ward Bowie, Barbara Bowie Reckner, son Sherwood L. Moore, Jr and two infant daughters. She is survived by nephews Marc Reckner (and wife, Pat), Eric Reckner, nieces Patricia Robinson and Gladys Bowie, great nephew Marc Reckner, Jr., great niece Sarah Langley (and husband, Josh), former husband Sherwood L. Moore, Sr., cousins Olive Perry, Wayne Bowie, Bill Bowie, Elwin Bowie, Alton Bowie, Judy Tippett and Sally Davis.
She will be greatly missed but we can honor her memory by living by her words “Have faith, do the best you can and be kind to everyone.”
A Private Visitation will be held prior to the burial. Burial for Lois will be Thursday March 14, 2024 at 2:30PM at Trinity Memorial Gardens, 3221 Mattawoman Beantown Rd, Waldorf, MD 20601.
