Louis Arthur Murphy Sr.'s Obituary
Louis Arthur Murphy Sr., 79, of Benedict, MD, passed away on September 29, 2016 at the Burnett Calvert Hospice House. Louis was born Jan. 16, 1937, on Hilltop Farm, Benedict, to the late Edward T. Murphy and Mary Cecilia Burch Murphy.
Louis was a farmer, raising tobacco, corn and soybean. Louis was also a truck driver and founding member of the Benedict Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Louis enjoyed being on the farm, working on tractors and equipment, reading, being with his family, his dog Jack and cats Shorty, Chumlee, Jinks and Mama Cat. He played Santa for many years on Christmas Eve for his children, grandchildren, cousins, friends – for anyone who wanted to stop by.
Louis was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Alice Higgs Murphy and brothers, Edward C. Murphy and Richard (Dickie) F. Murphy Sr. Louis is survived by his brother, Patrick Joseph Murphy Sr. and his children, Sharon Murphy Mattia (Joe), Louis A. Murphy Jr., (Lisa) Mary Louise Gibson (George), and Lona Marie Drake (John); grandchildren: Louis A. Murphy III (Stephanie); Chelsea and Alyssa Murphy; Michelle Welch Quade (Lee); and Kyle Welch (Krystie); Ryan and Todd Drake; JoeJoe (Randi); Maureen (Dave); John and Michael Mattia (deceased); great grandchildren: Conner and Colin Murphy; Kristin; Tristen; Kara; Angelina; and Kyleigh Mattia; Tyler Sparrow and Nicolas; Braylin; Cannon; and Rhett Quade; and David Welch. Louis is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends for Louis’ Celebration of Life at the Benedict Volunteer Fire Dept. on Tuesday, October 4th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with Firemen Prayers at 7 p.m. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 5th at the Benedict Volunteer Fire Dept. followed by interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to the Benedict Fire House after interment for lunch.
Pallbearers will be Louis A. Murphy III, Kyle Welch, Ryan Drake, Rickie Murphy, Michael Murphy and PJ Murphy. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Benedict Volunteer Fire Dept.
