Mark Allen Powers' Obituary
Mark “Sparky” Allen Powers, 64, of Indian Head, MD, passed away on July 18, 2026, at Adventist Healthcare Fort Washington Medical Center, Ft. Washington, MD, surrounded by his loving family. Mark was born on September 1, 1961, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Mary Earleen (Smith) and David Scott Powers. Mark graduated from McDonough High School, Pomfret, MD, in 1980. He was involved in his high school drama club. Following graduation, he began his lifelong calling in public service. In the 1980’s, he was a Security Officer at Southern Maryland Hospital Center. From 1988-1999, he was a Campus Police Officer at the Prince George’s County Community College, where he was recognized as Officer of the Year. He was an Instructor at the Prince George’s County Community College Police Academy from 1990-2007. In 1999, he began his career at the La Plata Police Department, from which he retired as a PFC on October 17, 2017. On July 20, 2021, Mark re-entered the workforce as a Security Officer at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, where he was still employed at the time of his passing. Mark carried his passion for public service into the community through volunteering. He was an EMT and Firefighter with the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department and the Waldorf Volunteer Emergency Services, Station 3. He was a life member of the Charles County Mobile Intensive Care Unit, White Plains, MD. A few of Mark’s hobbies included participating in theater productions with the Port Tobacco Players in the early 1980s, serving as a Boy Scout Leader, Pack #410, Cub Scouts #425, and helping to coach his son’s baseball team. He was involved in the reenactment of the 18th Virginia Infantry. In addition to Mark’s parents, Mary and David Powers, he is preceded by his in-laws, Marjorie and Vincent Janes, and brother-in-law, Mark Janes. Mark is survived by his wife, Marjorie (Janes) Powers; son, Matthew Powers; sisters, Beth Swann of Welcome, MD, and Amy Hale of Frederick, MD; and brothers-in-law, Thomas Janes of Hollywood, MD, Vincent Janes, Sr. of Hollywood, MD, and Gregory Janes and his fiancée, Heather, of Waldorf, MD. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart. Visitation will be on Monday, August 3, 2026, from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM until the time of Fire Department Honors and Prayers at 7:00 PM, at the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department, 911 Washington Ave, La Plata, MD 20646. Funeral Service will be on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 10:00 AM, at the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Waldorf, MD. A Repass will follow.
