Mary Evelyn Pickeral's Obituary
Mary “Evelyn” Pickeral, 92 of Waldorf, Maryland peacefully transitioned on January 5, 2025, at her home of over seventy years. Evelyn was born October 7, 1932, to the late John Roscoe Proctor and the late Elizabeth Marie (Richardson) Proctor in Waldorf, Maryland. At eighteen years old, Evelyn married Joseph “Allie” Pickeral in 1949, and together they began building their family. Evelyn poured her heart into raising her four beloved sons - Joseph "Junie", William "Connie", Daniel "Danny", and Gregory "Greg". Her boys were her world, and she would move mountains for them without hesitation. In their loving home, she created an environment rich with laughter, strong values, and unwavering support, teaching them by example the importance of hard work, compassion, and family unity. Her greatest joy and proudest achievement was watching her sons grow into the men she knew they could become. She treasured the time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, taking immense joy in watching them grow. Her face would light up whenever they visited, and she never missed a chance to shower them with love, through praising their hard work, baking their favorite chocolate cake, or listening to their stories. Each grandchild and great-grandchild held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in creating cherished memories with them through holiday and birthday traditions. She also valued the time she and her sisters spent. They were always there for each other, offering support and encouragement. They knew each other better than anyone else. Their sisterhood was a source of strength and comfort.
Evelyn was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many with her kindness, and unwavering love. She was the heart and soul of Proctor's Inn Beer Garden for over twenty-seven years. Evelyn transformed the Charles County establishment into a beloved local landmark. Her natural hospitality made the restaurant a gathering place where strangers became friends and friends became family. She took immense pride in creating an atmosphere where everyone felt welcomed and valued, often greeting regulars by name and remembering their favorite orders. The inn's success was a testament to her dedication, strong work ethic, and genuine love for serving others. When she wasn't bringing her special touch to Proctor's Inn, Evelyn could be found in her own kitchen, cooking up memorable Sunday dinners for her family. She was renowned for her mouthwatering potato salad and perfectly seasoned fried chicken, dishes that became legendary not just at home but throughout the community. These family meals were more than just dinner – they were celebrations of love and togetherness. Evelyn's deep faith was a cornerstone of her life, expressed through her devoted membership at St. Peter's Church. The church community was like a second family to her, and she found both peace and purpose in her unwavering spiritual journey. She also had a special passion for playing bingo and the lottery, finding joy not just in the game but in the precious moments shared with family.
