Mary Darlene Wilkerson's Obituary
Mary Darlene Wilkerson, 74, of Waldorf, MD passed away September 22, 2022 at her residence, surrounded by her loved ones. Born August 21, 1948 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of William G. Walrath, Sr. and Mary J. (Weidman) Walrath. Darlene is survived by her husband, Larry A. Wilkerson; her daughter, Michelle L. Allen; four grandchildren, Victoria Brooke and Olivia, Noah and Jonah Doss-Allen; and three siblings, William G. Walrath, Jr. (Lora), Cynthia D. McKinney, and Thomas P. Walrath. Darlene was predeceased by her parents and by her youngest daughter, Emily A. Wilkerson-Brooke.
Darlene retired from Federal Government service wherein she held senior level positions at the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Department of State, managing budget development and execution efforts for U.S. activities in national and international theaters. She loved studying God’s word, music, quiet times with her favorite people, and being Maw-Maw to her four grandchildren. She especially loved sunrises and sunsets and all the hours in between on the beaches on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where she first learned to love those days, while honeymooning in 1970. She very much looked forward to the return trips each year.
Darlene started every morning with daily devotions, scripture reading and prayer. Both blessings and burdens were addressed in her daily communications with our Lord. She was both creative and artistic, and could often be found magically turning common household items into works of art. She was a master of the kitchen, very comfortable feeding a few people or very large crowds. She would always more than satisfy the tastes of every palette, and make sure that no one walked away hungry. She made friends easily, with people quickly seeing her inner beauty that matched her outward appearance.
The family will receive friends on Friday, September 30, 2022 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Raymond Funeral Service, P.A., 5635 Washington Avenue, LaPlata, MD 20646. A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Raymond Funeral Service, followed by a 11:00 AM Celebration of Life Service. Interment will be at Trinity Memorable Gardens, 3221 Mattawoman Beantown Road, Waldorf, MD 20601.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Charles County Hospice, 2505 Davis Road, Waldorf, MD 20603.
