Richard Elwood Howard's Obituary
He was preceded in death by his wife Irene (Rene) Howard (1993), his son James Lee Bussard (1975) his grandson James Richard Mandish (2010) and his granddaughter Kelli Jo Mandish (2020),
his parents Edward and Mabel Howard and his six siblings. Richard is survived by his long time life companion Mary J. Harvey of Raphine, VA, also by his two daughters Bly Ann Mandish of Mulberry, FL and Sara J. Bucklew (George) of Waldorf, MD, his Grandsons Timothy Lee Bussard of Morgantown, W. VA, Anthony M. Whelan (Stacy) of Waldorf, MD, Eric V. Womack (Lisa) of Lakeland, FL and John E. Mandish (Mary) of Davidsonville, MD and Granddaughter Denean Bucklew of White Plains, MD. He is also survived by 15 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great Great Grandchildren.
He was born in York PA on February 19, 1931, he moved to the DC area as a teenager and attended and graduated from Anacostia High School. He then moved to the family home in Piscataway, MD where he resided until December 2020. He was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953 as Corporal. He attended Business classes at the University of Maryland until he and his two brothers started their own company, Howard Sanitary Products in Clinton, MD (Howco). He was Co-owner, Secretary/treasurer and Salesman for the company which they owned for over 50 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 259 in Clinton, MD for many years and then became a Lifetime Member of the American Legion Post 238 in Hughesville, MD, he was also a member of the DC Columbia Moose Lodge in Clinton MD and also a member of the VFW Post Silesia, MD (Past Commander) and then the VFW in Waldorf, MD. Known for his kindness, generosity and compassion for others and his love of Music.
His love for his family was unmeasurable. He is our forever Pappaw and he will be forever loved and missed.
In lieu of flowers we request a donation be made in his name to the American Legion Post 238, Hughesville, MD.

A memorial gathering for Richard will be held Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Huntt Funeral Home, 3035 Old Washington Rd, Waldorf, Maryland 20601. Following the memorial gathering will be a memorial service at 1:00 PM.
