ROBERT LEE RAWLINGS's Obituary
Raymond Lee Rawlings, 87, of Hughesville, Maryland, passed away on February 6, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, routine, and genuine connection with the people he loved and served.
Even at 87, Raymond could be found behind the bar four days a week as the owner and bartender of Ray’s Pier Restaurant and Bar in Benedict—a place that became much more than a business over his 45 years of ownership. Ray valued routine and purpose, and nothing brought him more joy than spending his days talking with customers who became friends and welcoming familiar faces through the door. Ray’s Pier was a second home to many, and “Mr. Ray” was at the heart of it.
Ray was employed with the Washington Post for over 30 years as a newspaper distributer, working seven days a week in Charles County. In his younger years, Raymond proudly served his country as a member of the Army National Guard, carrying that sense of duty and responsibility with him throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Virginia Rawlings; his beloved wife, Patricia Rawlings; his son, Ray Rawlings; and his siblings, Carroll, Dorothy, and Pat.
Raymond’s memory will live on through his children: Jeff Rawlings (Barbara) of Colonial Beach, Virginia; Brian Rawlings of Brandywine, Maryland; and Sherri Beck (Leon) of Greeneville, Tennessee. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren—devoted grandson Cody, Brian, Jake, Nick, Katy, Dajah, Josh, and Taylor—and six great-grandchildren who were a source of pride and joy.
Services will be held as follows: Visitation will take place on Wednesday, February 18, at Brinsfield Funeral Home in Charlotte Hall from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 19, at 10:30 a.m. at Brinsfield Funeral Home, followed by interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens.
Raymond Rawlings will be remembered as a steady presence, a hardworking businessman, a proud family man, and a familiar, friendly face to generations who found comfort, conversation, and community at Ray’s Pier. His routine may have ended, but the stories, laughter, and friendships he built will endure.
