SALLIE (BAICAR) WRIGHT's Obituary
Sallie Dianne (Baicar) Wright went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, April 19, 2026. She passed away peacefully in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, where she had lived for the past six years. Born in Washington, DC on May 26, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Martin Eugene and Marguerite Haden Baicar. Sallie lived with her parents and brother, Bruce, in Takoma Park until 1948 when they moved to Indian Head, Maryland. Sallie would remain in Southern Maryland most of her life until 2001 when she fulfilled a lifelong dream to live on the water by moving to Panama City Beach, Florida.
Sallie graduated from Lackey High School in 1958 where she played basketball and softball and was a banner girl for the marching band. She was accepted into the physics program at the University of Maryland but decided to get married and start a family instead.
Music always played an integral part in Sallie’s life. She played piano and loved to sing. Sallie was raised a Southern Baptist and was a lifetime member of the church choir. She was able to sing soprano, alto and mezzo-soprano; she sang wherever needed. At the Marbury Baptist Church she was part of a trio and filled in as choir director.
Sallie also enjoyed playing tennis and swimming and she loved the beach. Family vacations were always to the beach, mostly to Myrtle Beach. During the 18 years she lived in Panama City Beach, she enjoyed hosting family and friends for vacation getaways. You’d always be welcome with a big pot of pulled pork, pimento cheese and chicken salad.
Sallie worked as a civil servant in the Navy for over 30 years. Her work took her to 14 countries including Australia, Singapore, Israel, Egypt, Venezuela and Japan. After retiring, she continued working part-time handling the finances for her church.
In 2019, she moved to be closer to her children and live independently at the Fairfax Senior Living Facility in Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Sallie is survived by her three daughters Shari Grimes of Indian Head, Maryland, Kari Anderson of Woodbridge, Virginia and Valri Lightner (Eric) of Laurel, Maryland; grandchildren Tammie Mitchell (Jay), Amie Longfellow (Pat), Kellie Grimes, Sallie Farmer (Greg), Kyla Robinson, Erin Robinson. Bobby Anderson, Brian Anderson (Katie), Eric Lightner and Nick Lightner (Franzi); nine great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters; and brother Bruce Baicar (Sue) of Myrtle Beach, SC. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and son Barry Wright.
Pallbearers: Kenny Baicar, Greg Farmer, Dominick Grimes, Dylan Longfellow, Pat Longfellow, and Ryan Longfellow.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the First Baptist Church of Welcome at 10:30 AM until time of funeral services at 11:30 AM.
